Hollis Towns Headshot
  • A Wildcat First, Always

Before the newsrooms, before the national awards, before the corner offices, there was Fort Valley State. Hollis R. Towns arrived on campus on a football scholarship, a middle Georgia kid with something to prove. As a standout linebacker, he learned the value of preparation, discipline, teamwork and so much more. And as a student journalist for the campus newspaper, he found his voice, writing articles that challenged the status quo and held the university to a higher standard.

That combination of toughness and purpose has defined everything since.

    Never Too Far from Home

Hollis built a 25-year career that took him from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution to the top of American journalism. He has led newsrooms and teams at every level, from the Kalamazoo Gazette to the Cincinnati Enquirer to a VP of News role at Gannett, where he oversaw more than 150 media properties. He currently serves as the inaugural Chief Operating Officer of Deep South Today, the nonprofit journalism network that includes Mississippi Today, Verite News, and The Current.

Going back to the beginning, though, Fort Valley State is more than a school to Hollis. It's home. He grew up in its shadow, in public housing, in a three-room apartment just down the road from campus. As a kid, he attended the FVSU summer youth program and received his first Christmas present from "Santa Claus" at a holiday giveaway in the Fort Valley State gymnasium. He and his sister were sometimes guests of Dr. Waldo Blanchette, a former president of the college. In high school, Hollis lettered as a standout nose guard for the Peach County Trojans and was recruited to play college ball at Fort Valley State after turning down other national offers to stay close to the place that had already shaped him.

No matter the position or where his career has taken him, Fort Valley has always been his north star. He has served on the Foundation Board, advised the journalism program, and hosted lecture series to expose FVSU students to the realities and possibilities of media careers. He has mentored graduates, served on multiple university search committees, and several former FVSU presidents have called on him for counsel on matters of institutional influence and strategy.

All of it, every hour and every conversation, has been in service of one thing: the betterment of Fort Valley State University.

What He Brings to This Role

Hollis is not just a journalist. Throughout his career, he has operated at the intersection of editorial vision and business strategy. He has built training academies, launched revenue-generating initiatives, managed multimillion-dollar operations, and navigated complex organizational change. He was recently appointed to the Poynter Institute's National Advisory Board, one of the country's foremost journalism leadership bodies. His teams have been Pulitzer finalists, featured in the Columbia Journalism Review, and recognized with dozens of state and national awards.

He brings that same strategic thinking, operational discipline, and coalition-building ability to the alumni association presidency.

    Why Now

Hollis has served communities and organizations in many roles—but none are as dear to him as being a father and husband, and most recently, a new grandfather. He and his wife Gail live in Birmingham, AL are are parents to adult children Michael, Tyler, Jessica and William. He is very close to his sister Jetta McLaughlin, a fellow Wildcat, and spends each football season supporting the team and its leadership.

Inevitably, it all comes back to Fort Valley State for Hollis. It gave him everything: a scholarship, a platform, a direction, and a community that believed in him when the world hadn't yet caught up. His campaign to lead the national alumni association is not about a title. It's about returning that investment with the full weight of a career spent leading organizations through change and into growth.
