Statement from the President
Greetings, Wildcats!
Many of you have seen the report posted on our University’s Facebook page regarding the decision of the BMMB. This decision has understandably sparked strong feelings across our alumni, students, and supporters. The Blue Machine Marching Band has long been a source of pride and tradition for Fort Valley State University, especially during Homecoming, and we recognize how deeply this impacts the Wildcat family.
I have received a high volume of calls, emails, and messages regarding this matter as it relates to the Blue Machine Marching Band; and simply put, there is nothing I (we) can do about it. While we are all disheartened by the situation, what is most troubling is to see greater concern about the band’s absence at Homecoming than about the well-being of our students who may be affected physically, mentally, and emotionally. At the end of the day, the students are the most important part of this University—they are the reason we exist. Their safety, health, and growth must always remain our first priority.
Some of the comments shared, both directly to me and on social media, have been completely out of line. We must always remember that our words carry weight, and when directed negatively toward students, they can cause harm rather than help. Respect and integrity should guide how we respond, even in disappointment. As a community, we must remember to lead with morals and ethics. Our students deserve respect, encouragement, and support, not criticism or disparagement.
As we have always done, we will make the most of every situation, uplift one another, and pray for a safe and successful Homecoming weekend.
Respectfully,
Garren M. Walker '22
