Wildcat Love Gets Better With Time

DARRYL & DIANE FORT

How They Met: We met the evening of homecoming 1977 in front of the student center after the football game. Something about how Diane carried herself captured my attention and I was determined to learn more about her. After our initial encounter, whenever I saw her I made an extra effort to say hello and chat just to steal a few minutes of her time. She would work registration and after I registered for my classes, I would stop by her station for an uninvited visit. After several months of "chance encounters", she gave in to my persistence and we officially started dating. While at FVSC she pledged Delta and I pledged Kappa. After graduation, we both entered the workforce in pursuit of our careers, which took us in different directions. While we worked and lived in different locals in Georgia, we stayed in touch and visited often. We soon realized life together was much better than life apart, and on December 22, 1984 we wedded at Central Union Baptist Church in The Valley. Our marriage has produced 2 wonderful children, Davin and DeAnna. We celebrated 41 years of wedded bliss December 22, 2025. Our marriage is based in the covenant of Jesus Christ and Genesis 2:24 "Leave and cleave and become one."

Their Time at FVSC/FVSU: We both became members of the Divine Nine (D9) Diane pledged Delta Sigma Theta and I pledged Kappa Alpha Psi. We made many memories while at FVSC and continue to make memories at the annual Homecoming Celebration.

Post-graduation Journey: We both love Fort Valley State and are extremely appreciative of the education and life preparation we received at FVSC. We have missed only one homecoming since graduating from FVSC. We missed that year because we hade to decide weather we would support our daughter, who had a cheerleader competition that weekend, or attend homecoming. While the decision was difficult, we chose to support our daughter.

Advice for Current Students: While in college, students will meet and get to know several other students who they may find attractive and interesting. While exploring their interest, it is critical to be intentional about who they chose as a mate. Physical attributes are a critical part of selecting a mate, but physical traits won't sustain a relationship. Your goals and interest will drive your approach in life during and after college and you'll need a mate who is your biggest cheerleader to keep you lifted and motivated as you pursue your goals. Also, keep family and friends out of your relationship business. Our marriage is based in the covenant of Jesus Christ and Genesis 2:24 "Leave and cleave and become one."
